Campo Europa, La Cala Golf Resort, Mijas *****

18 Holes, Par 71, and 6,014 Metres

La Cala’s Third Course, the Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and are easier for the average golfer.

Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen; the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.”

Situated in Nueva Andalucia, the Mecca of European Golf, Aloha is a natural golf course, with varied vegetation, where no two holes are the same. Neither long nor short, the course is immaculately maintained.

Large and guarded greens at the Aloha Golf Course offer a good challenge, and the varied vegetation make each hole different.

It is important here to place your shots carefully, especially off the tee. Aloha is not a very long course, but it is sometimes tight and hilly. The trees are often dangerous and a number of greens are blind, multi-tiered and very fast. Generally, the greens are tricky, especially at the par 5 10th, with its adjacent lake.

Although an original layout, Aloha leaves an impression of harmony, and intelligent use of terrain from a golfing point of view, especially on holes 1, 12 and 18, all three are excellent.

A number of natural banks can cause problems, as can several water hazards, particularly on the back nine. Pleasant to play, and well laid out. Aloha is an excellent test of golf. If you hit straight and manage to stay on the ample fairways you’ll be safe.
