An Irish-South African visitor to Ronda is admitted to hospital, what follows is as good as Monty Python at their irreverent best.

Ronda Hospital

‘¡Levante el culo!’ The ward double doors crashed open and three starched nurses swept in. ‘Lift up your backsides!’ they shouted, an English approximation of the Spanish.

A nurse called Paqui pulled off my sheet and said, ‘Buenos días, señor. Good morning sir. ‘Lift up your backside; I want to change your nappy.’ She wore an expression that would make a fighting bull bellow for his mama.

How did I get into this situation?

‘They think you’ve had two strokes,’ said Verne, my wife, two days before. ‘You are in hospital in Ronda being tested.’ Then she noticed that I was running a temperature, called a nurse and the alarm was raised. High temperatures don’t go with strokes. Between them they saved my life.

Four nurses surrounded my bed. One was a lad called Pablito, a gentle person. ‘Oh Bernardo,’ he cried, ‘they wish me to sit on top of you because I speak a little English and you must not move when they put in the needle.’

‘Puncture in the lumbar,’ grinned a large nurse who mimed skewering a chicken.

I’ll give them this – they were quick. I was rolled over, Pablito was on top of me and the ‘knitting’ needle went in all in one movement. Later the Chief Medico arrived. ‘You have meningitis, Bernardo, and you cannot leave for three weeks. But you will be cured.’ So bang went our trip to Barcelona that we’d been planning. Then the 5th Cavalry, Roger, Verne’s son, arrived to help her. He too, fell in love with Ronda.

Back in the sickbay, this morning in the dawn cold, I had wallowed in my own urine, trapped in tight plastic knickers. I made a last appeal to Paqui brandishing the fresh nappy. It’s no wonder babies cry. It’s not the wetness – it’s the cold wetness.

‘Can I have a bottle instead to make pee-pee in please Paqui?’

‘No, Bernardo.’ She lifted my legs like a baby, wiped here and there with a soapy cloth and clipped a new nappy on like a medieval chastity belt.

‘But with a bottle I would not require a nappy,’ I pleaded. One clings to little independencies when one’s freedom is all but gone.

‘No,’ Paqui said. ‘I have told you already, Doctor’s Orders.’

Silly me. Spaniards love Order and Rules are the Rails on which it Runs. The bullfight, for example, has dozens of conventions which have remained unchanged for generations.

Across the ward, a stunning looking young Andalusian nurse, chock full of Moorish genes, looked over and smiled. I’ll never let her change my nappy, I swore silently.

Next morning, the battle cry rang out and the Penelope Cruz look-alike approached my bed. ‘Good morning, Señorita,’ I simpered.

‘I have instructions to change your nappy,’ she smiled in a none-of-your-nonsense way and pulled my sheet off. There I lay, in my underpants, nappyless.

‘Where is your nappy?’ she demanded, smiles all gone. The other nurses watched.

‘In the corner,’ and I pointed to where I’d thrown it.

‘¡Que barbaridad!’ How disgusting! She said and gave me a look that had probably helped her ancestors conquer the Iberian Peninsula. After two more days of my civil disobedience, the senior nurse handed me a plastic bottle. ‘OK, you win but if you spill it you’d better learn to swim.’

I practised my Spanish and learned bits of history from the nurses and medics, who could, in turn, use their English. A good friend, Antonio, was an English teacher and corrected me on his visits.

‘Did you sleep well, Bernardo?’ he asked one early morning.

‘No, Antonio,’ I retorted. ‘This bed was designed by Torquemada.’

‘Torquemada?’ he showed his surprise at the mention of their most notorious Inquisitor. ‘Yes,’ I said, ‘his prisoners would have lit the bonfires under their mothers themselves if they’d been made to sleep on this abomination.’ I had fallen into an exhausted coma just before the swallows wakened me swooping in to their tweeting young in nests spit-plastered under the eaves. ‘I’ll see if the bed can be fixed,’ he said. It couldn’t. So Torquemada won.

One lazy afternoon I asked about the Spanish Foreign Legion whose H/Q is in Ronda.

‘My husband is a colonel in the Legion,’ said Nurse Teresa. ‘Do you know their battle cry?’ she asked. “Long Live Death!”

They all looked proud of this daft but elemental Spanishism.

‘Do you know the Legion Hymn that they sing and march to on Good Fridays?’ I asked? ‘I love its Spanish inevitability…’

She started to sing. “I am the fiancé of Death…..…” A nurse took each arm and we shuffle-marched-staggered around the ward singing our heads off. Two other nurses joined in, laughing, imitating the drums. ‘Durrrum! Tshhh! Durrrum! Tshhh!’

The old man in the ward’s other bed, Carlos, woke up.

‘Stop this Fascist shite!’ he shouted or something like that. The Legion had been formed to support Franco, the far Right dictator. The old boy was a Republican and hated Franco.

‘We had better stop,’ said Teresa, ‘or Carlos will have a heart attack.’ It took me hours to convince him that I was not a Fascist but just loved that marching song.

Then Nurse Carmen walked in with a Zimmer frame and said, ‘Here is your andador,’ your ‘walker.’ After over two weeks in Torquemada’s bed, I had to learn to walk all over again. It was a quiet afternoon; I was in a silly mood. ‘Does he have a name?’

‘Who?’

‘El andador,’ I said.

‘No,’ she said, thinking I’d gone around the twist.

‘So let’s give him one. Alfonso? Your last King in the republic in 1931, was Alfonso the Thirteenth, yes?’

‘We’ll have to christen him then,’ said Nurse Mari-Paz.

‘No ways,’ said Nurse Carmen, ‘that old stuff is all finished. We’ll have a Coronation!’

‘We’ll invite Carlos’, said Teresa. And so the crowning of Alfonso the Fourteenth took place with a pink plastic bucket as his crown, pink out of respect for Carlos’ political beliefs. He, in the spirit of reconciliation, pronounced Alfonso King of Ronda.

Spaniards love joking. When friend Bosco asked why we were learning Spanish, I replied, so that we can understand what you are all laughing at. In this spirit, I’ll miss them all and their battle cry. If you have to get sick go to a Spanish hospital. They’ll make you better.

Franco era symbols and awards presented by the city of Ronda are to be removed completely after a meeting of the Commission of Historical Memory

Ronda’s Commission of Historical Memory, a town hall sponsored group, have agreed to completely remove all honors and symbols from the city of Ronda that glorify the dictatorial rule of Francisco Franco, Spain’s leader from the civil war until his death in 1975.

References in the city archives and documents to Franco that were obviously politically motived, such as the awarding of medals, keys to the city, will be withdrawn and publicly refuted. At the same time council archives where statements that glorify Franco as the father of the nation will be struck out.

Within Ronda, numerous symbols of Franco’s rule still exist, for example shields on buildings, names of buildings and streets etc, and over the coming months all of these will be removed. Several buildings and streets in Ronda are named after Franco era people or ideals, and in the spirit of promoting democratic values, the town hall intention is that young people will learn of their history of these names and the brutal government they represent.

The vote to commence removal of Franco era awards and symbols was held on March 3rd, and the full council was unanimous in their decision. Ronda Today is aware that not all inhabitants of the city are happy with this move, but those who think the decision is a waste of time and money believe history has turned against them.

Ronda's long awaited Eroski shopping centre is to go ahead on the site of the old football stadium between Avenida de Málaga and the Barrio San Rafael

The long awaited decision to go ahead with the Eroski shopping centre on the grounds of the old football stadium in the San Rafael district was finally confirmed today and is planned for completion in 2013, with as many as 1300 jobs to be created on completion and several hundred during construction.

In a joint press conference with Ronda’s mayor Antonio Marín Lara, and Alfonso Fernandez Villacorta, Managing Director of Grupo Eroski Expansion, and José Miguel Yubero, director of eastern expansion for the group, told stakeholders the project is estimated to be valued at 120 million Euros.

The mall will offer 65,000sqm of shopping, parking, and services and will be larger mthan La Cañada in Marbella. It will contain an Eroski hypermarket, 150 retail stores, a food court, entertainment area including cinema complex, parking for over 500 cars, a petrol station, as well as a new transport hub for the city.

All in all this is a huge project for Ronda and will no doubt transform the city of the tajo, with many expecting the existing shopping precinct in Calle La Bola to be adversely affected as major fashion retailers are pushed to secure competitive locations within the new centre.

Retailers believed to be interested in coming to Ronda include FNAC, Massimo Dutti, Dorothy Perkins and H&M, though El Corte Ingles and Leroy Merlin are not expected to be amongst the newcomers at this stage.

Recent speculation that the shopping centre was to be cancelled were talked down by Eroski’s representatives who confirmed to Ronda Today that 30 shopping centre projects had been under consideration nationwide, with all but 4 cancelled. Ronda’s shopping centre was given the go ahead due to lack of competition from other large shopping centres within the district.

After several months of closure, the Grazalema Tourist Information Office reopens under the new management of Clive and Sue from the Grazalema Guide website and the Iberianature Forum

Clive Muir and Sue Eatock, Grazalema Tourist Information Centre

For several months Grazalema hasn’t had a functioning tourism office, however this is all about to change with the appointment of Clive Muir and Sue Eatock as the new owners of the centre. Central to the Sierra de Grazalema, the village is around 25 minutes drive from Ronda.

This weekend (Feb 27th and 28th 2010), Andalucía Day weekend, sees the grand opening with nibbles and wine to celebrate Clive and Sue’s new ownership of the centre. All are welcome, and this is a fantastic excuse to get out and enjoy nature.

The Grazalema Natural Park is one of Spain’s most spectacular, and worth a visit, though almost everyone who knows the park will recommend staying for several days to truly enjoy seeing all the park has to offer. From walking, birdwatching, flower and butterfly appreciation, to quaint white villages such as Grazelema, Zahara, El Bosque, Montejaque, Cortes de la Frontera.

Clive and Sue are locally acknowledged as being amongst the very few who know the park well, the proof of this being the excellent Grazalema Guide they publish.

The tourist information centre is located in the main car park of the village in Plaza de Los Asomaderos which is just behind the central plaza, and offers maps and guides of the area, an artist exhibition space, and local products for sale.

Clive and Sue have also employed two long time staff members from the previous information centre, Lourdes and Nuria, and all share a passion for the park, Northern Cadíz, and of course the Serranía de Ronda.

Walking passes to visit the ecologically precious parts of the Grazalema Natural Park are also available, Garganta Verde, El Torreon, El Pinsapar and Llano de Ravel, so to avoid disappointment and unnecessary delay be sure to visit the information centre first before setting off on your day’s travels.

Clive and Sue are also partner owners in Iberia’s largest nature forum, the Iberianature Forum, where experts and enthusiasts with a love of the nature of the Iberian peninsula can get together and discuss their passion.

The carnaval procession in Ronda is small, but eagerly awaited as it signals the beginning of a week of school holidays. We have photos of the 2010 procession

Carnival in Ronda

Last Saturday saw Rondeños come out into the streets in their thousands for the annual Carnaval procession (cabalgata) which this year snaked it’s way from the top of La Bola to the Plaza de Toros.

Carnaval in Ronda is a small affair due to the Pedro Romero Feria being the big event in our fair city, though the people of Ronda still make a decent effort to showcase their love of having fun.

The cabalgata consisted of several floats towed by 4wd vehicles, including last year’s Goyesca Dames who parodied their formal attire with home-made gowns and extravagant moves to the great amusement of the crowd.

High school students also took part, with a great selection of clowns, cross-dressing footballers and their cheerleading squad, or babies sucking dummies. As well, several employee groups joined the festivities with political messages about how the economic crisis is affecting their livelihood.

But perhaps the highlight, at least for Rondeños watching the procession, was the musical act “Entre los Flores”, who this year became the first Rondeño act in living memory to reach the semi-finals at the Falla theatre in Cadíz, the home of Spanish carnaval. Whilst the Rondeños didn’t win in Cadíz, they certainly did in Ronda, with a crowd that couldn’t get enough.

Heavy rains cause some flooding near Ronda for the third time since Christmas, guests in one local hotel were forced to evacuate their rooms as rising river levels caused chaos.

Heavy rain has once again struck the Serranía casting fear and terror into weary homeowners and hoteliers who have endured hundreds of thousands of Euros of flooding along the banks of the Guadalcobacin river.

Yesterday the Metereological office upgraded weather conditions in Málaga province to yellow and warned of heavy rain, with expectations of 40 litres to fall in Ronda and surrounding areas.

Sadly their worst case scenario came to fruition with several property owners nervously waiting the night out as rain and rising streams threatened to flood their homes for the third time since Christmas.

In the Llano de la Cruz guests at a popular local hotel, the Molino del Puente were woken at 4am and evacuated from their rooms as rising river waters overwhelmed the storm water drains leading to flooding in several ground floor rooms.

Another local hotel, the Don Benito was spared the flooding but parts of the access road have been damaged as fast moving water ripped at the road base causing some erosion. Further upstream several local property owners were today trying to clear fallen trees that are blocking small streams as they enter the Guadalcobacin river.

In Ronda a rising stream forced the closure of Camino de los Tejares in the early morning, and nearby olive farmers situated between the Carretera de Ronda (A-397) and Calle de Marbella (C3) were this morning attempting to shore up low lying fences from eroding into the street.

EGMASA, the state owned company responsible for clearing Andalucía’s many waterways is this week gearing up for a large operation to tackle cleanup in the Serranía, with parts of the Guadalcobacin river believed to be on their list of urgent work needed.

Ronda’s councillor for the environment Alberto Orozco confirmed yesterday that as soon as the rains stop and workers can get access to streams and water channels they will commence cleanup operations with heavy equipment.

An Olvera man survives a gas explosion in his shop with extensive first degree burns to his face and neck

An Olvera man is today very lucky to be alive after a gas explosion in his shop on Calle Julian Besteiro. Francisco Javier (58) suffered extensive burns to his face in the explosion but is otherwise unhurt.

The explosion occurred at midday yesterday as the result of a gas buildup in a false ceiling above the hot water system from an undetected leak in the valve. Fire officials told Ronda Today the gas burner was a piezzo type and hadn’t been used that morning, resulting in a bigger buildup of gas down to the level of the piezzo.

Neighbours of the shop, the Super Sur supermarket described hearing a loud bang and then screaming. Fire and ambulance were immediately called but the owner managed to exit the shop into the care of neighbors, however several neighbouring properties were evacuated by the fire service whilst the gas bottles were made safe.

The accident could have been much worse, normally several tanks are stored in the same location, but fortunately the remaining five tanks were outside the building on a terrace when the explosion occurred.

Fire service personnel have reiterated that storing gas tanks inside the property should be avoided, and recommend regular inspections of all gas equipment to avoid situations such as this.

The owner of the shop was discharged from the local medical centre several hours later after doctors treated first degree burns to his face and neck. His supermarket remains closed whilst insurance assessors determine the extent of damage.

Figures just released show traffic accidents in Ronda were down 7.7% from 2008 to 2009, with 237 accidents reported.

Traffic Accidents in Ronda

The councillor for traffic, José Morales has released a report showing less vehicle accidents in Ronda, but with more injuries caused, leading to calls for the local police to be more vigilant and enforce traffic regulations more rigorously.

In 2008, the number of accidents reported totalled 257, whilst 2009 this dropped to 237, a 7.7% decrease, however the number of injuries from cuts and bruises to more serious injuries requiring hospitalisation increased from 47 to 61.

Cars and vans formed the bulk of accidents at 174 compared with 34 moped or motorbike accidents. Most of the reported accidents recorded damage to property (in most cases only another vehicle) but under Spanish law it is a requirement to report all accidents where a vehicle or other property is damaged by a driver.

The local police head of operations José Carrasco attributed the rise in injuries ignorance in the use of seat belts, with many Rondeños simply pulling the belt over their shoulder to give the appearance of wearing it, whilst not actually clicking the catch into position.

Accident hotspots in Ronda include Avenida de Málaga with 39 reported accidents, Calle Sevilla with 17, and Avenida Andalucía with 10 accidents. Distractions such as answering mobile phones and ignoring traffic signs were the major cause of driver accidents.

Francisco Marquez, municipal secreatary of the PSOE announces candidacy of Marín Lara for mayor, quickly denied by party bosses

An embarrassing faux pas on the part of the secretary of municipal politics in Ronda’s PSOE who stated today that Antonio Marín Lara had been nominated as the party’s next mayoral candidate was quickly rubbished by party bosses.

Francisco Marquez, PSOE municipal secretary of the PSOE was commenting about speculation Marín Lara would be appointed mayoral candidate, and confirmed the party executive had approved Lara without a vote from party activists.

This in response to comments from officials in the Partido Popular (PP) at the weekend that a backroom deal had been agreed within the PSOE to choose Marín Lara instead of allowing party activists to vote on candidates under normal democratic principals.

PSOE general secretary Francisco Cañestro and mayor Antonio Marín Lara hastily organized a press conference several hours later to deny any backroom deal and assure party activists that no decision had been taken, and that a vote for list candidates would be taken in due course.

Sources inside PSOE Ronda have suggested to Ronda Today there is significant unease from PSOE party faithful that Marín Lara and his eight PA turncoats will be given preferential list placement over long time PSOE members as reward for abandoning the PA and giving the PSOE a governing majority during 2009.

Ronda Today understands that as many as 20% of PSOE activists may be tempted to vote PA in the next municipal elections if Marín Lara is appointed mayoral candidate simply our of revenge.

Francisco Cañestro is understood to be keen to find a compromise with disaffected PSOE activists, with the possibility several of the turncoat councillors may not in fact find their names on the party list thus preserving a sense of unity amongst PSOE party members and traditional voters.
