Its a poor idea, you will only let "good" banks to keep up with an irresponsible policy as they will get rid off their assets, and have most of the concentrated debt in one bank probably backed by the government or the ECB or both, which in essence is an offical transfer of private debt to the public sector.

Ahhh, thank you so much for clarifying that, and after looking at images of people being garroted (not my favourite passtime I might add) I see that strangulation is most definitely a more obvious possibility considering the bulging eyes of the statues.

The more I think about it, the more I think that when non Spaniards came to Ronda and saw this shrine and the carvings they automatically associated the cord around the necks with a hangman's noose. Fairly obvious conclusion to arrive at. So naturally the story became legend. However the Garrote was the main method of execution back in the 18th Century - a loop around the neck with a stick to twist the rope until strangulation. In 1828 according to sources the Garrote was made the official means of execution in Spain. Goya drew a depiction of a priest being Garroted by French forces during the Peninsular War titled "Por una navaja" - for carrying a knife - and the method can be clearly compared with those stone figures at the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows. The last person to be executed by this method was in 1959. The death penalty was abolished in Spain in 1978.

You raise a good point Nigel. Thank you.

The unofficial name of the temple is the shrine of the hanged, however this could be confusing misnaming based on the fact both methods of execution are related to the neck...

The Olive Press newspaper www.theolivepress.es is covering this story at length currently. It seems the EU is going ahead with the plan to site the AVE line through the Ronda valley after all, as the coastal route has been rejected by the EU. Even the Olive Press's editor Jon Clarke is now selling his property, La Alcantarilla, at Arriate near Ronda and an advert appears for it appears in this months edition - seems a coincidence.

Having stayed in several Parador hotels during our stay in Spain we were expecting nothing less than fantastic service, but the location of the hotel completely won us over. We stayed in a two level room on the top floor with fantastic views from the terrace of the gorge and the bridge. We paid extra to have that room but had been told by friends we met along the way that in Ronda it is worth it. A very pleasurable stay.
